Hello! I’m Yoonjeong Cha :)

I aspire to design and evaluate systems to promote better communication and collaboration among users. To be more specific, I am interested in designing interactions between users and intelligent systems to promote well-being of people and to empower people with more understandable and transparent systems. I am also eager to help people with special needs by designing better interactions for inclusive technology. My research interests are focused on human-computer-interaction (HCI), computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), intelligent systems, and personal informatics.

My interest in HCI became concrete as I conducted research projects with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding sticker misinterpretation in instant messenger (CSCW 2018)
  2. Evaluating perception of shared information for collaboration in AR (UIST adjunct 2018)
  3. Investigating collaborative patterns of user interaction with smart agents (Master’s thesis)

In these studies, I have developed both qualitative and quantitative skills:

  • Identified user needs and problems through surveys and interviews
  • Developed working prototypes using Arduino, Android, and HoloLens
  • Evaluated the prototype on users through controlled experiments
  • Applied emotion and attention theories from psychology and cognitive science
  • Analyzed the results using design methodologies and statistics

More specific tools and methodologies that I used throughout the research were:

  • Data Science: Statistical Analysis, Machine Learning, Data Visualization using R and Python
  • Programming: Python, R, Java (Android), C# (Unity, HoloLens, Arduino)
  • UX Design: Photoshop, Illustrator, Interviewing (In-depth & FGIs), Usability Testings

Recently, I got a paper accepted to CHI’19 Late-Breaking Work. πŸ™‚
More descriptions on the works are shown below in featured projects.
